Brussels Contemporary Art Fair 2014. The second edition features new talents and cutting-edge artworks, both from emerging artists and established ones.
Following the success of the 1st edition of the OFF at « La Bourse » (former Brussels Stock Exchange) and the enthusiasm of visitors at Tour& Taxis in 2013, the OFF stays true to its vocation of leaving room for feelings, perceptions, sensitivity – in other words, to the adventure of art.
The OFF wants to develop a synergy between the established and the alternative scene by showing visitors new talents and cutting-edge artworks, both from emerging artists and established ones. We give gallerists national and international visibility to the other key players of the art world (collectors, art consultants, art buyers, curators, critics, artists…) and the general public .
The OFF manifests the will to be an alternative fair by exhibiting a less conventional art, a more daring approach. Energy, enthusiasm, creativity, novelty are its peculiarities.
In addition to the stands VILLAGE OFF (30 m2) , 25 specific spaces (20 m2) will be devoted to young galleries and curatorial projects.
OFF-TEAM
OFF-Art Fair opens up contemporary art to young people. The OFF-TEAM is composed of students from two final year classes at the Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels. Students, who are paid as volunteers, are actively involved in the organisation of the fair and can better understand how to organise a cultural event by following this course.
LOCATION : TOUR & TAXIS
When you enter the Tour & Taxis site, your eyes will be immediately drawn to the Royal Depot, with its brick and blue stone walls, rising up majestically in front of the canal. Built at the beginning of the 20th century and renovated in 2001, this former trading hall, – where you can find shops, restaurants and offices – has now become the venue for cultural events. The Brussels Antiques and Fine Art Fair (BRAFA), the Book Fair, the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival and the European Business Summit are all held at Tour & Taxis.
Tour & Taxis is far more than the impressive Royal Depot. The largest Passenger Terminal in Europe can also be found, just behind the Sheds, on this immense site situated in the very heart of Brussels.
GUEST ARTISTS
MARIO FERRETTI
Belgian sculptor born in 1970, he works as an assistant at the Académie royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels. In 2001, he was awarded the prize ‘Jeunes artistes’ of the French-speaking Community. He is a member of ‘Sillage’, a group of visual artists who install their temporary exhibitions in everyday life spaces.
BENOÎT + BO
French-Chinese duo Benoît+Bo was born in Tianjin in 2002 of the meeting of a Chinese artist and a French artist who now both live and work in Shanghai. They are known in China under the name of Dong Xi Bo, East Wave-West Wave, a beautiful symbol of an East-West synthesis through globalized Chinese contemporary creation. They produce works on different media (painting, photography, video, installations).
RAYMOND MINNEN
Belgian artist showcased by the galleries De Zwarte Panter, exhibiting at Art Brussels, and 100Titres, exhibiting at the OFF – Contemporary Art Fair, Raymond Minnen is presenting his ‘fireplace embellishments’, 140 zany found objects which only take on their full meaning once gathered. This artwork will be show within the relax area so that it can be looked upon at ease by the visitors.
CÉLINE VAN KIMMENADE
Belgian artist who graduated from the ENSAV. Céline usually realizes big paintings with other mixed media, be it oil, acrylic, ballpen, felt-tip marker,… Her paintings are both inhabited by the memory of her past paintings, and by the present moment.
