Contemporary Canadian textile-based collection

Cambridge Galleries - Design at Riverside, Cambridge

The collection was conceived to pay hommage to the region's textile manufacturing heritage, and to provide a public forum for exceptional textile based work by artists from across the country.

Explore the creativity and ingenuity of some of the country’s foremost textile artists as the Cambridge Galleries launch an exhibition of selected works from their permanent collection. “The interesting thing about this collection is its important link with our community,” explains Mary Misner, Gallery Director. “This is because the textile industry provided the economic base for what is now the City of Cambridge. Since the decline of local textile production, the mills that line the Grand River have been repurposed.”

“By choosing contemporary textiles as the particular medium for our collection, we make a strong connection with our past. At the same time, the innovative nature of the works collected definitely situates this medium in the midst of current Canadian art practice,” Misner continues. “This is an exhibit built on the history of Cambridge, for its residents to both reflect back and look forward.”
