Music on Film - Film on Music

The 4th year of Music on Film - Film on Music is coming October 18-22, 2007!

Our festival is founded on the philosophy that music in all its varieties is an enormously inspiring art form that can be explored in new and interesting ways through the medium of film. We screen all types of films (documentary, experimental and feature) from around the world where the central theme is music- following the stories that emerge as the creative energies of musicians and filmmakers intersect.

MOFFOM was established in 2004 as a non-profit organization designed to bring together the community of filmmakers engaged in such production and to promote their projects to a wider public in a non-competitive, accessible and friendly festival environment. It was also determined from the start that the festival would be based in the historic center of Prague, with its headquarters proudly located in Palace Lucerna, one of the oldest functioning cinemas in Europe and a local cultural landmark.

The festival proved popular with a dedicated local audience and quickly found its niche within the wider context of Czech and European Union film festivals. MOFFOM expanded in 2005 to include a more broadly based global outreach, in terms of both content and working partnerships with similar-minded institutions. A specific Country Focus and programmatic tributes to outstanding filmmakers were also added as part of the ongoing development of the festival and its goals.

2006 proved to be the biggest year of all, with the addition of an Audience Award, dynamic live concert screening events and regional retrospectives helping MOFFOM to achieve breakthroughs in terms of attendance, press coverage and international attention, while still retaining the unique atmosphere, locations and sense of community that had contributed to the success of previous years.

A prominent feature of MOFFOM since its inception has been the commissioning and presentation of new music for classic silent films. This aspect of the program has consistently proved to be the most well-attended and highly anticipated event every year to date, bringing together internationally recognized musicians and beautiful restored film prints to increasingly large audiences.

As MOFFOM enters its fourth year of successful year of bringing the best of music on film from around the world to local audiences, we are pleased to present another five-day annual celebration of the visual and musical arts. Still based primarily in the landmark Palace Lucerna, we now also cooperate closely with Kino Svetozor, the most successful and innovative art house cinema in the Czech Republic, as well as several intimate cinemas in the heart of Prague, all within walking distance of each other.

For 2007 once again more than 60 prominent documentary and feature films will be shown, and an additional 20-30 music videos, shorts and experimental projects. We expect more than 40 international guests to attend, as in previous years. These include filmmakers and musicians, as well as media and industry professionals from both disciplines and a number of foreign journalists. The successful combination of live concerts, photo exhibitions, panel discussions, student workshops, parties and chill-out evenings that our target audience has come to expect will take place throughout the festival.
