The Festival has grown from 1991 when 13 poets from Colombia participated for an
audience of approximately 2,000 people; to 1996 when poets from Germany, Australia,
Austria, Bosnia, Brazil, Costa Rica, Cuba, Chile, Spain, United States, France, Guadalupe,
Guatemala, Italy, Japan and Mexico performed at with poetry 40 places through the city to
about 60.000 people; to 1999 when 64 poets from 42 nations will read their poems in 93
poetry readings.
"The rapid increase, in the Festival, of the number of participating poets, from all five
continents and representing 67 countries to-date added to the impressive magnitude of
audiences at all events, suggests the increasing influence of poetry in society," the Festival
states.
