Biography

Safet Zec, the painter and engraver from Bosnia-Herzegovina, was born in Rogatica in 1943. At the age of twelve, he dedicated himself to the art of painting and drawing in which he showed a great talent. Upon the graduation from the Art High School in Sarajevo, he continued his studies in Belgrade where he graduated from the Academy of the Fine Arts in 1969. He obtained his postgraduate diploma in 1972. He became exponent of the new orientation called "The Poetic Realism". At the beginning of 90's he was the one of the most important artists in the country and its representative on many international exhibitions. He had lived and worked in Belgrade until 1989. Following few years he spent in Sarajevo. When the war started in 1992 he left his country.

In 1992 Safet Zec came to Udine, Italy. All of his works were left in his studio in Sarajevo. In Italy Zec had to rebuild his identity. He started to work on new paintings, drawings and engravings. In the 1994 he showed his new works at he first museum exhibition together with a few old ones from a German gallery. He won the Grand Prix "Alpe Adria" for drawing in Ljubljana in 1996. The monograph "Safet Zec" was promoted in Ljubljana in 1998 on the occasion of his exhibition "Paintings, drawings and Engravings 1992-1998". He exhibits currently in Italy, France and throughout the world. Today he lives and works in Venice.

The artworks created by Safet Zec during the past nine years in Italy will be for the first time shown in Sarajevo at the City Gallery Collegium Artisticum in May, 2001. All of his previous works and, for the first time, the artworks he made in his youth, will be on show as well. "Works 1958-2001", exclusively from the artist's collection, after the premiere in Sarajevo, is going to be on show throughout Europe: the exhibition will be shown in the French city - Lille in September and October, 2001.

Biografia

Safet Zec, pittore e incisore bosniaco, è nato a Rogatica nel 1943. Già all'età di dodici anni comincia a dipingere e disegnare, dimostrandovi un grande talento. Dopo la maturità alla Scuola supperiore d'Arte a Sarajevo, continua gli studi all'Accademia di Belle Arti a Belgrado. Si laurea nel 1969 e nel 1972 finisce anche gli studi del post-diploma. Per la critica d'arte contemporanea diventa l'esponente principale di una corrente nuova chiamata "realismo poetico". Nei primi anni Novanta è uno degli artisiti più importanti del suo paese e lo rappresenta alle maggiori esposizioni internazionali. Vive e lavora a Belgrado fino al 1989. Negli anni che seguono è di nuovo a Sarajevo. Qui, nel 1992, è colto dallo stato di guerra per la quale lascia il proprio paese.

Nel 1992 Safet Zec arriva in Italia, a Udine. Tutte le opere sono rimaste nello studio a Sarajevo. In Italia Zec è costretto a ricostruirsi un identità. Senza fermarsi lavora sulle nuove tele, disegni e incisioni. Cosà già nel 1994 si puà presentare alla prima mostra museale in Italia, proprio con questi nuovi lavori. Soltanto una decina di tele arrivate da una galleria tedesca sono testimonianza dell'opera precedente di Zec. Nel 1996 a Lubiana è vincitore del Gran premio "Alpe Adria" per il disegno. In questa città è stata presentata anche la monografia "Safet Zec" durante la grande mostra personale "Pittura, disegni, incisioni 1992-1998". Espone in Italia come in Francia e negli Stati Uniti. Oggi vive e lavora a Venezia.

Le opere di Safet Zec del periodo italiano lungo nove anni, saranno presentate per la prima volta al pubblico sarajevese nella Galleria civica Collegium Artisticum. Alla mostra saranno esposte anche opere rimaste a Sarajevo e per la prima volta le opere giovanili. Così formata, esclusivamente dalla collezione dell'artista, l'unità "Opere 1958-2001" comincierà il suo viaggio attraverso gli spazi espositivi in giro per l'Europa: la mostra sarà ospitata nella città francese Lille in ottobre e novembre 2001.
