'The This & The That of a Category Error' is a new exhibition produced for SMART Project Space by Glasgow-based artists Joanne Tatham (b.1971) and Tom O´Sullivan (b.1967). Working collaboratively since 1995, they make enigmatic images, sculptural objects and installations that are designed to inhabit a range of scenarios, activating their surroundings and cajoling the viewer into participating in an absurd kind of theatre. The exhibition combines new works and site-specific installations with restaged elements from differently themed projects. The installation forms a constructed tableau that makes reference to aesthetics and attitudes from various moments in cultural history.
Joanne Tatham and Tom O´Sullivan’s recent solo exhibitions include ‘A fee to avoid our expenses’, The Modern Institute/Toby Webster Ltd, Glasgow, 2007; ‘The Pyramid’, The Watchie, Catterline, Aberdeenshire, 2006; and ‘Rhetoric Works & Vanity Works & Other Works’, Newhailes, Edinburgh, National Collecting Scheme for Scotland and Contemporary Art Society commission, 2006. Tatham and O'Sullivan represented Scotland at the Venice Biennale in 2005.
