Chicken Pox
Figureworks is pleased to introduce Fulvia Zambon’s latest series of
paintings.
These oils on canvas are initially alarming with what appears to be
children in various stages of discomfort - resigned faces and
severed limbs being supported with unusual impediments in fantastical
settings. Bold in color and finely executed, they draw the viewer
beyond the surface and encourage contemplation and speculation in to
the situations surrounding each composition. The magical element that
softens the imagery is one’s immediate need to personalize these
relationships with one’s own course of events. Whether relating to a
childhood, sibling, or offspring struggle, the viewer is able to
empathize with these unique and arresting circumstances. In short,
these paintings explore and play upon these magical and often
haunting memories to create stages of intimate reflections.
Fulvia says of this series, “I choose to call this body of work
Chicken Pox, a name of a children's illness, well connected to my
paintings. I was setting a composition for one of these paintings
when the memory of the red room of chicken pox appeared in my mind.
In my native country, Italy, when young children came down with
chicken pox they were put in their room draped in red with shielded
windows in order to ‘went out the sickness’. We stayed in bed with
our little white gloves to avoid scratching and leaving permanent
scars. The days seemed so long as we watched the red light beam
through the windows waiting for the sickness to leave our miniature
bodies. I don't carry scars from that time but maybe an attraction to
red drapes that I use often in my paintings."
Fulvia attended the Accademia Albertina in Turin, the Accademia di
Belle Arti di Brera in Milan, (studied with Lydia Silvestri) and the
Art Students League in New York City (studied portrait painting with
Ronald Sherr). Fulvia has exhibited extensively including her latest
solo exhibition in February 2006 at Paolo Tonin Gallery in Turin -TAG
(opening of 18 galleries in conjunction with the Winter Olympic
Games), a solo show at Headquarter, Hollywood, CA, and a celebrated
group show at Museum of Permanente, Milan Italy, Premio Arte in
2004. Her work is in many private and public collections.
