Another Day

De Chiara Stewart, New York

Another Day on Planet Earth is the second in a three-part series of exhibitions at De Chiara|Stewart exploring contemporary responses to the genres of the portrait, the landscape and the still-life. These exhibitions are intended to provide an idiosyncratic overview of artists working in a variety of media who use traditional genres as one of the organizing principles for their practice in order to examine the viability of painting-generated genres in an age of ever-multiplying artistic media.

Where Are All the People? had set up a dialogue between a variety of artistic strategies that use portraiture and figuration; from figuration as a departure point for a larger post-modern exploration of the idea of representation to an attempt of reinvigorating the genre of traditional portraiture directly.

Another Day on Planet Earth presents a variety of responses to the genre of the landscape. These range from meditative attempts to reinvigorate some of the landscape's traditionally "uplifting" functions to work that openly rejects or explores these very conventions. Much of the work seeks to reveal the inevitably constructed character of our experience of nature, often by attempting to reconcile or literally explode some of the dichotomies underlying the artistic conventions of the landscape. In this exhibition nature is both eternal and suddenly catastrophic, both pastoral and artificial, both desolate and populated, both sublime and ridiculous.

The third of these three-part series of exhibitions, exploring contemporary responses to the still-life will be held in the summer of 2001.
