Genetic Sequences

Absolute Art Gallery is proud to present the solo exhibition, 'Genetic Sequences' by the important, contemporary artist, August Highland.

August Highland is known for creating text-paintings. The source material for his current body of work is the Human Genome Project. Highland is incorporating into his art the gene expression of what some are calling the "Biotech Century."

The exhibition includes new canvases exploring real and imaginary passageways of genetic sequences. Highland has developed a technique of producing visual work that involves "writing" his pieces rather than "painting" them. He does this with a unique digital method by which he composes instructions much like an architect designing a blueprint, a screenwriter writing a script, or a composer writing a musical score.

Highland's new body of work beautifully integrates art with biotechnology and genetic research by using human genetic sequences as the compositional element. Inspired by the Human Genome Project, each artwork contains DNA information from one gene built up layer upon layer on canvas.

"August Highland conflates the typographic, photographic, and purely graphic, jumping off the computer screen and into the conceptual space between eye and mind, page and wall." -- Peter Frank, Art Critic for the Angeleno and LA Weekly, Senior Curator of the Riverside Art Museum.

"August Highland is exploring a new language of complex digital images, and has evolved a vocabulary that is both visually seductive and highly original." --Stephen Nowlin, Director, Williamson Gallery, Art Center College of Design.

"In what August Highland terms 'Alphanumeric Sequencing,' art makes the conversion from image/text into text/image when his ingenious software renders a very painterly 'hash' of words, numbers and letters onto canvas. The piling of text upon text is a visual representation of discursive "white noise" where all meanings are equally visible and equally blurred. The colorful and delicate work is as beautiful as it is conceptually cogent." --Rex Bruce, Director, LACDA

The exhibition will also donate two works by the artist and the gallery to the Levitt Pavilion live-auction. The exhibition opens June 2nd and runs through 28th and is open to the public.
