A Still Life

This body of recent work consists of paintings that continue the artist's experiments in portraiture and landscapes. "A Still Life" reflects a departure of subject matter from his previous studies of primates. Inspired by maritime iconography, the subject matter consists of sea fishermen, adolescent boys at play in the ocean, steel fishing vessels and lighthouses. The work is expressionistic, thoughtful, and often captures tension in still moments.

A classically trained painter, Joel Dugan has a signature monochromatic palette and all works are painted with oil on linen and finished with multiple layers of varnish.

Joel Dugan was born in Des Moines, Iowa in 1977. He studied painting and illustration at the Academy of Art College in San Francisco. His work has been included in numerous group exhibitions in the USA, most recently at the Robert Miller Gallery in Chelsea at a benefit art auction for a documentary project about the American painter, Alice Neel. He has exhibited at the La Luz de Jesus Gallery in Los Angeles, 111 Minna Street Gallery in San Francisco, Fuse Gallery in NYC and has been featured in numerous publications such as the "Heavy" art and music book project by alife and Neverstop Publishing, the Genus Vol. 1 book project, Dazed and Confused, NYLON and Arena U.K. In 2000, he was awarded a scholarship by the New York Society of Illustrators.

Gallery hours are 11 am - 7 pm, Tuesday - Friday,
12 - 7 pm Saturday and Sunday. Closed on Mondays.
