Beginning October 24, the MARCO showcases a new self-produced proposal in the galleries on the first floor. The solo exhibition by IGNACIO URIARTE — curated by Juan Canela — brings together a selection of his latest works (2008-2014). Ignacio Uriarte (b. 1972) was born and raised in Krefeld, Germany. From 1992 to 1995 he studied Business Administration and from then on he worked for various corporations in Germany, Spain and Mexico. In November 2003 he decides to dedicate himself to what he calls 'office art'.

The work of Ignacio Uriarte takes as a starting point his former occupation in the office of a multinational company in order to circumnavigate questions related to routines in the workplace. Conceptual and minimalist, Uriarte develops a meticulous, incisive, and sometimes obsessive practice, in which narrative and words are rare guests, while on the other hand, performance is the protagonist with the help of actors like gesture, material, distance, repetition and time.

1s & 0s is a title based on the artwork of the same name — a series of A4 sheets of paper on which ones and zeroes are typed randomly with different typewriter models — with the intention of emulating digital language by means of an illegible stammering. This work could be possible thanks to the collaboration of Colección Sirvent. The artist has selected around 160 historical models out of the 3,500 items included in the collection, and used them afterwards according to their technical specifications, ink and lettering.

From this point onward a dialogue is established with other works which once again emerge from the office routine, placing emphasis on jobs related to culture and the impact that digital technology has had on them. Addressing directly the space/time reference, the exhibition in Vigo comes to an end with the video work Rolling Credits (2014), which displays — in the form of film credits — MARCO staff from its very beginning by the end of 2002.

By using formats which combine analogical with digital media and a binary language — black and white, light and dark, positive and negative —, the works included in the exhibition conform a selection that, according to the curator, ‘have a nostalgic feel as if trying to resist the inevitable.’

Ignacio Uriarte (b. 1972) was born and raised in Krefeld, Germany. From 1992 to 1995 he studies Business Administration in Madrid and Manheim and works from then for corporations such as Siemens, Canon, Interlub and Agilent Technologies in Germany, Spain and Mexico. He also studies Audiovisual Arts in Guadalajara, Mexico (1998-2001) and quits his last 'serious' job in November 2003, when he decides to dedicate himself to what he calls 'office art'. From 2004 to 2006 he is resident artist at Hangar, Barcelona. Since 2007 he lives and works in Berlin. www.ignaciouriarte.com
