The Festival of the Arts presents all manner of artistic activity dealing with the theme of Courage in 2014. Around 300 cultural projects at 200 venues. Additionally, around 100 open studios and galleries will present their current programmes as associated parts of festival.
This year's 48 STUNDEN NEUKÖLLN - A Festival of the Arts presents all
manner of artistic activity dealing with the theme of Courage in 2014.
Around *300 cultural projects* at *200 venues*. Additionally, around
*100 open studios and galleries* will present their current programmes
as associated parts of festival. A considerable quantity of the venues
participating can be found along Karl-Marx-Straße.
One floor up in the *Neukölln Arcaden *shopping centre, *the central,
curated exhibition* dealing with this year's theme, Courage, will be on
view. (/Attention: contrary to previous announcements, there will not be
a second central show at Richardplatz./ /The projects that were planned
for that location have now been integrated into the exhibition at the
Neukölln Arcaden)./ In this central exhibition, 30 projects will deal
with artistic aspects of societal and personal courage. From June 27,
2014 at 7 pm, the festival will begin with a ceremony including a
welcoming address by Dr. Franziska Giffey, district councillor.
In the same building, on the *5^th & 6^th floor pa**rk decks *of the
shopping centre, a range of activities will organised by the
*Klunkerkranich* crew, further livening up the shopping centre with art.
Many other venues along this main road in Neukölln will feature music,
theatre, performances and exhibitions too:
For the first time, the *former hair dresser's salon at Stadtbad
Neukölln* will be part of the festival. It features original 1970s decor
and will host an interdisciplinary event, *NeuCowardice *in which six
international photographers present their work dealing with this year's
festival motto. Their interpretation takes the form of a show entitled
“Neue Feigheit” (new cowardice). Are all the cowards in Europe collected
in Berlin-Neukölln, to show how they live their alternative lifestyle?
This will be complemented by performance loops by the formation
„weristjack“, on the hour (featuring the following artists: Millinee
Chaisrihar, Ely Grey, Billy Kenrick, Anja Gaard Olsen, Bendt Mørch Olsen
and Kumi Umamoto, and others).
Another project in that neighbourhood will be on view at the
*Quartiersmanagement Ganghoferstraße* office, entitled*Auch mein
Mauerfall (*My Fall of the Wall too) based on research conducted by a
group that calls themselves SISYPHOS, DER FLUGELEFANT(SdF) under the
direction of Taiwanese director Chang Nai Wen. She conducted research
into how Berlin residents with non-German backgrounds experienced the
Fall of the Wall. The rest of society seems not to have taken notice of
this segment of the population's experiences, on both sides of the Wall.
Are we all now really “one people”? The interviews presented here
encourage the courage to take a more multicultural approach. “Auch mein
Mauerfall“ received support from Berlin city council (Berliner Senat):
it is a participatory project in the framework of the “We are the play“
project in co-operation with the English Theatre Berlin | International
Performing Arts Center, the Gedenkstätte Berliner Mauer (the Berlin Wall
memorial) and Kapelle der Versöhnung (chapel of reconciliation).
There will also be a concert at the *Alfred-Scholz-Platz *branch of
the*Berliner Sparkasse *where the**ENK Ensemble for new music will
present their*ANTI GO NEE* concert. The works performed will, mostly,
deal with themes from ancient Greek mythology, especially with the
legend of Antigone, Oedipus' daughter, who wasn't able to bear injustice
and courageously questioneded it whereever she encountered it.
Directly on *Alfred-Scholz-Platz i*tself, Nadia Kaabi-Linke will offer
guided tours of her site-specific *Meinstein* project. Christian
Mayrock, a local artist, will provide guided tours of art-related
locations in the area co-ordinated by *Kunstfiliale Passage*. In the
basement/ *Kegelkeller of the Passage,* Master students of Sound Studies
at the Universität der Künste Berlin will present their *ZeitKlangGefühl
(TimeSoundFeeling) *sound**installations and videos dealing with
time-based processes in which sound plays a significant role.
Other important venues along this main road include the
Puppentheatermuseum, Rix Box, Heimathafen Neukölln, the Passage and
Karl-Marx-Platz where special projects will be on view during the festival.
48 STUNDEN NEUKÖLLN is a forum for projects in all conceivable
artistic disciplines found in the Berlin art scene. The festival both
presents and supports art, thereby contributing to discussions of ideas
affecting society at large while also reflecting said society. Since it
was founded in 1999, 48 Stunden Neukölln has developed into an event
that serves as a role model; it is the largest independent festival of
the arts in Berlin. Works of art realised for the festival have an
impact beyond Berlin-Neukölln: many take a strong stance on societal
issues and catalyse exchanges of ideas on the international art scene.
48 STUNDEN NEUKÖLLN is organised and carried out by Kulturnetzwerk
Neukölln e.V. With limited financial support from Neukölln district
council. It is only possible with support from countless foundations and
other sponsors making the festival a unique presentation of cultural
activity in the district.
