comunicato stampa

LISTE - Art Fair Basel: The art fair for leading galleries of a new and middle generation with a focus on contemporary and especially young, emerging art and many new discoveries.

LISTE – Art Fair Basel will take place from June 17 to 22, 2014. This year, it will once again be a meeting place for important collectors, influential museum people, artist and art lovers. LISTE will be presenting a highly promising selection of the most emerging, primarily young art and many new discoveries.

This year’s LISTE is presenting 78 galleries from 30 countries with art works by more than 180 artists. LISTE is considered the most important fair for a young generation of emerging galleries. Thus, every ambitious international and young gallery applies to participate in LISTE. From over 300 applications, the jury – composed of curators – selected the most important and most promising galleries of the younger and middle generation, each of which will bring a high quality selection of contemporary art to Basel. The galleries presenting this year are from Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, China, Colombia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Great Britain, Guatemala, Holland, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Norway, Peru, Poland, Rumania, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, and the US (a complete list of galleries is included at the end of this document).

Galleries
Again this year, our 78 galleries will be showing important positions and special new discoveries in the media of painting, photography, sculpture, drawing, installation, performance, video/film, and multimedia/digital art. The jury places particular importance on curated presentations by galleries with selected artists. Thus, most galleries will be presenting one to three artistic positions.

16 Newcomer Galleries
Of this year’s 78 galleries, 16 will be making their LISTE debut. “We are very pleased,” noted Peter Blaeuer, Fair Director, „to present this year 5 galleries from Latin America involved in emerging art.” These galleries are: 80M2 Livia Benavides (Lima), with an installation by Rita Ponce de León (*1982); Document-Art (Buenos Aires), with objects by Jose Luis Landet (*1977); Instituto de Visión (Bogotá), with a group presentation with artists Ana Maria Millán (*1975), Ana Roldán (*1976), and Carolina Cayecdo (*1976); Proyectos Ultravioleta (Guatemala City) also with a group presentation including Naufus Ramírez Figueroa (*1978), Regina José Galindo (*1974), Federico Herrero (*1978), and Jesús Negrón (*1975); and Galeria Jaqueline Martins (São Paolo), with a solo presentation by Brazilian artist Ana Mazzei (*1980). These galleries will all be presenting artists from their countries who are still relatively unknown. Further there will be 4 noteworthy galleries of a new generation from the US: 47 Canal (New York) with the young artists Gregory Edwards (*1981) and Josh Kline (*1979); Essex Street (New York) with Cameron Rowland (*1988) and Jason Loebs (*1980); Real Fine Arts (Brooklyn) with Jana Euler (*1982), Lena Henke (*1982) and Sam Pulitzer (*1984); and Freedman Fitzpatrick from Los Angeles, with the multimedia artists Matthew Lutz-Kinoy (*1984), Mathis Altmann (*1987), and Hannah Weinberger (*1988). From the gallery city of Berlin we will introduce the following 4 new young galleries: Lars Friedrich will show Hans C. Lotz (*1989), Nolan Simon (1980), Georgie Nettell (*1984) and Peter Wächtler (*1979); Dan Gunn will introduce Alessio delli Castelli (*1979); Mathew Gallery will show Than H. Clark (*1981) and Sandy Brown will exhibit the artist Dena Yago (*1988). Also new to LISTE are Blank Projects from Capetown, with a solo presentation by Jared Ginsburg (*1985); Dawid Radziszewski of Warsaw will introduce the young Polish artist Łukasz Jastrubczak (*1984). Truth and Consequences from Geneva will have a group presentation with Mathis Altmann (*1987), Vittorio Brodmann (*1987) and Gregory Gicquel & Daniel Dewar (*1975/76).

7 Galleries Return from Art Basel
7 galleries will be returning to LISTE after an appearance at Statement or Feature at Art Basel: Chert, Berlin; Freymond-Guth Fine Arts, Zurich; Gaudel de Stampa, Paris; Laurel Gitlen, New York; Mother's Tankstation, Dublin; Plan B, Berlin/Cluj and Overduin & Co. from Los Angeles.

31 Solo Presentations
The jury and fair management particularly value having a high number of solo presentations as such presentations provide the individual artist an especially focused and fitting platform. Solo presentations also offer curators, collectors and those interested in art the opportunity to gain stronger insight into each artist’s work. Among the solo presentations being shown at LISTE are: Claudia Comte (*1983) at Bolte Lang (Zurich); Peter Wächtler (*1979) at Dépendance (Brussels); Ana Mazzei (*1980) at Jaqueline Martins (São Paolo); Beni Bischof (*1976) at Sommer&Kohl (Berlin). Further, more Campoli Presti (London) is showing the artist collective Reena Spaulings (started 2004), the gallery Vl, Vll (Oslo) will show Amy Yao (*1977) and Office Baroque (Brussels) presents Kyle Thurman (*1986). (A detailed list of artists can be found at www.liste.ch/press.)

Artists over 40
Over the last several years, an increasing number of young galleries have been integrating older artists – often re-discoveries – into their gallery program. Responding to that change, LISTE has made it possible for artists of an older generation to be presented at the fair. However, the fair’s focus remains on artists under 40 and the vast majority of the artists themselves are under 40.
Among the works by artists over 40 being shown are drawings by Bert Mebius (*1950) at Stigter Van Doesburg (Amsterdam); filmic works by Luther Price (*1962) at Circus (Berlin); large-format paintings by Giulia Piscitelli (*1965) at Fonti (Naples); new works by Dora García (*1965) at Ellen de Bruijne
Projects (Amsterdam); photographic and installative works by the artist Laura Lamiel (*1948) at Marcelle Alix (Paris) and photographs by John Divola (*1949) at Wallspace (New York).

Structural Expansion
With the conversion of the Warteck´s former malt silo and the resulting increase in space, the number of fair spaces has grown from 66 to 78. In the restructured area there will also be a second restaurant on the 5th and 6th floors, with a terrace and a view of the Rhine, and on the 3rd floor visitors will have the opportunity to enjoy another large terrace. The legendary outside staircase will be donning a brand new look.

Performance Project
For 10 years, the Performance Project has been an integral part of LISTE. „It is very near and dear to our hearts,” said Peter Blaeuer, “to offer a platform to performance art, which does not have an easy time of it in the art market.” The Performance Project will again be curated by Fabian Schoeneich, Assistant Curator at Kunsthalle Basel. This year’s Performance Project at LISTE will focus on voices, language, sound, choreography, and dance: Among the performers are Paul Thorsen-Nagel & Tobias Spichtig (*1985/*82), Anne Imhof (*1978), Eleanor Bauer (*1983), Alexander Bczynski Jenkins (*1987), Lawrence Abu Hamdan (*1983) and Michael Dean (*1977). A detailed schedule of the Performance Project is available at www.liste.ch/programme/ performance project from mid May on.

What the students have learned as theory will be put to the practice test at LISTE. For details, please see: www.liste.ch/exhibitors/special-guests

Main Sponsor
For the past 18 years, E. Gutzwiller & Cie Banquiers Basel has been our main sponsor. With their generous sponsorship, they allow LISTE to offer the galleries low-cost terms and conditions. We are very pleased to have such an eminently capable, loyal and committed partner.

Short History of LISTE
The impetus for LISTE’s founding in 1996 was the fact that a new, self-confident generation of gallerists was coming of age at the end of the 1980s, gallerists who had little chance of securing a space at the world’s most important art fair, Art Basel. The first LISTE in 1996, dedicated exclusively to this new generation, presented 36 galleries from 12 countries and was a resounding success!
The past 19 years have seen many (at the time unknown) artists make their debut at LISTE. The same success story applies to galleries – unknown at the time but now among the most established.

Main Sponsor since 1997: E. Gutzwiller & Cie, Banquiers, Basel
