Open to entry from artists within Studio Voltaire's one hundred and thirty strong membership, the annual SV Open competition aims to showcase the strength and depth of work from its ever-growing organisation. Artists Pablo Bronstein and Joe Scotland have been invited to act as an external jury and have chosen four artists to develop and show bodies of work. Each will be given enough room for the subtle dialogues within their practices to emerge.

Andy Parker's work stakes a claim for the insignificant architectural
history through his manual reproduction of every day elements. For sv03 he
will create two new pieces that re-present in the gallery physical
actualities or psychological undertones found elsewhere on site. Ursula
Llewellyn's paintings cast dingy metaphors on contemporary life. Here she
will present a series of works that hover between base realism and sardonic
theatricality through their placement of domestic animals roaming through
her native Hastings landscape. James Lander's video pieces fetishize the
documentary urge within performance art. For sv03 he will show a group of
works creating for the viewer a lost, seemingly once navigable space between
performance and its documentation. Laura Aldridge will show an ongoing work
entitled Magnanimous Magnanimity. This series of indexically produced images
presents a paired down photography that subtly references colour-field
abstraction and the ready-made.
There will be a gallery discussion on Sunday 13 July at 2pm, the selected
artists and selectors will explore the themes within the artists' practice.
Studio Voltaire is an artist run space that actively promotes the creation,
presentation and access to the arts through its exhibition and education
programmes. Studio Voltaire also provides a much-needed resource of artists'
studios in South London.
