Perito Moreno is one of the largest glaciers in the world. Artist's attention concentrates on the forms of it and uncertainty related to their fragility and impermanence. The use of this forms which are continually broken and cracked, which melt and re-freeze in natural conditions is a metaphor of one's struggle with emotions and "the breaking of inner glaciers".

comunicato stampa

Curator: Maks Bochenek

Perito Moreno is one of the largest glaciers in the world which melts into the Patagonian Lake Argentina and is still growing, despite the global warming. As a result of its continual enlargement the huge pressure of water makes the glacier break up and release frozen blocks. This on-going, spectacular process of the glacier calving takes place amidst the applause and cheers of spectators.

Natural phenomena constantly captivate our attention. However, the effective manifestations of nature demonstrate its harsh rules, merciless to human being and human wavering nature. Hanna Nowicka’s attention concentrates on glacial forms and uncertainty related to their fragility and impermanence. The awareness that a from, structure or surface can break upsets with a possible loss of integrity, deformation, destruction. As soon as the line of crack appears the irreversible process begins and no-one wields power over its further development. Similarly, the loss of control is linked with accumulated and frozen emotions, prejudice and inner reluctance. It is the moment when one is not able to bear the inner compulsion, the pressure related to the expectations of one’s milieu or the constraint of performing a culturally or socially prescribed role. Emotions always focus energy on an idea or desire which seeks release, being rooted in the subconscious it finds a bodily manifestation.

The substance of the body demonstrating emotion assumes a non-obvious form in Hanna Nowicka’s latest works. Glacier structures or ice-bound objects, "prepared" by the artist, refer to the limits of affective reactions and the anxiety of their force and uncontrolled eruption. The fear of one’s reactions is simultaneously the fear of the unanticipated facet of nature. Its unrestrained character, unpredictability and storminess constantly infringe one’s sense of safety between one’s inner weakness and resistance to external threats. The use of glacial forms which are continually broken and cracked, which melt and re-freeze in natural conditions is a metaphor of one’s struggle with emotions and "the breaking of inner glaciers".

"Perito Moreno" speaks about our daily "breaking" because of seemingly petite reasons in unspectacular situations. Hanna Nowicka shows this little effective, unattractive and quite breaks of our own "glaciers" in seductive visual and sound layers.
