Patrick Cull

Cambridge Galleries Preston, Cambridge

Disposable geometry. The works in this exhibition interrogate the central objectives of geometric abstraction; specifically the goal of producing painting that is strictly self-contained, non-representational, and two-dimensional or flat.

comunicato stampa

Cull’s practice combines the visual language of modernist abstraction with contemporary materials and technical processes borrowed from commercial sign-making industry. The work embodies the hard edged stripes, targets and other geometric forms made with contemporary materials like PVC, vinyl and resin. This juxtaposition exploits the tension between physical material and pictorial space in art objects that straddle the boundary between painting and sculpture.

The works in this exhibition interrogate the central objectives of geometric abstraction; specifically the goal of producing painting that is strictly self-contained, non-representational, and two-dimensional or flat. Included in the exhibition are new drawings produced by machines, automated by the artist, yet removed from the traditional sense of mark making. Taking away the preciousness of what is normally associated with artworks, Cull draws our attention to the objects by emphasizing the possibilities embedded in accidents, tests, and automated gestures.

The artist would like to thank Ontario Arts Council for their financial assistance towards production.
