A unique exhibition - Exhibition Opening

What is a masterpiece? Is this notion still relevant today? Who decides what is a masterpiece? Once a masterpiece, always a masterpiece? The opening exhibition of the Centre Pompidou-Metz examines the notion of the masterpiece, past, present and future, through an exceptional selection of almost eight hundred works of art.

Thanks to the extraordinary richness and diversity of the collection of the Centre Pompidou, Musée national d’art moderne (which is the source of the majority of the artwork displayed in this exhibition), some of the greatest figures of 20th century art are on display in Metz. Come and discover or rediscover major works and experience unexpected "encounters with works of art". In addition, commissions have been especially undertaken for the occasion, along with loans from prestigious French and foreign institutions, creating an ensemble which is as novel as it is majestic. Paintings, sculptures, installations, graphic arts, photography, video, sound works, film, architecture, design, and more, every field of artistic creation is represented, reflecting the cross-disciplinary nature of Centre Pompidou-Metz’ programming.

Masterpieces? invites you to partake in a journey in four parts. In the Grande Nef, a chronological display takes you on an encounter with "Masterpieces throughout history" and highlihgts key moments in the creation of the Musée national d’art moderne and its collection. In Gallery 1, "Stories behind masterpieces" plunges you into the life of the works presented, from their production right up to their reception by critics, institutions and the visitors themselves. The exhibition continues in Gallery 2 with "Masterpiece Dreams", the proposal of a dream museum. Finally, in Gallery 3, "Masterpieces ad infinitum " examines the persistence of the notion of the masterpiece over the 20th century, in an era when images became easily reproducible.

Shows, concerts and events set the tempo for this long weekend, reaching a crescendo on Museum Night, Saturday 15 May. The Centre Pompidou-Metz will celebrate this event by staying open late into the night. Special events have been programmed for the evening. With a mix of family and festive events, these five days are a great opportunity for the public to discover this new venue. Simulation d'Entrée publiqueThe German artist Mischa Kuball has designed special lighting for two sites adjacent to the Centre Pompidou-Metz. His spectacular installations highlight the link between the historic city centre of Metz and the new Amphithéâtre district (location of the Centre Pompidou-Metz). The installation Passage public brings new life to the Amphithéâtre passage. Pulsating lights indicate the way to the city of tomorrow.
Designed for the footbridge leading from the train station to the square in front of the Centre Pompidou-Metz, his second project Entrée publique places the new institution centre stage. With spotlights and a red carpet treatment visitors to the new Centre Pompidou-Metz make a dazzling entry!

Saturday 15 May
6th edition of Museum Night and Festivities!

As the highlight of the week, the Centre Pompidou-Metz is opening its doors until 1 o’clock in the morning for this special occasion. Artistic events and festivities set the pace for this evening of delight!

As of 9.30pm - "Éclats" by Maider López
With help from the public, the spectacular performances by Spanish artist Maider López temporarily divert and transform landscapes and buildings. To kick off the festivities for Museum Night in Metz, Maider López will intervene at nightfall, when the Centre Pompidou-Metz is lit up. White umbrellas lighted from the inside will be distributed around the building. Participants will be invited to wander around before gathering on the front square. Like thousands of atoms gravitating around the Centre Pompidou-Metz, and just as many mini poetic and ephemeral replicas of its architecture, participants will thus constitute a surprising work of art, a living metaphor of this venue as defined by its public. An aerial photograph will be taken engraving this poetic display to memory. The participants may keep their luminous umbrellas as a memento of this scintillating evening.

At 11pm - Come and admire the fireworks by Groupe F
Lighting the sky, gigantic waves of fireworks especially created for the opening of the Centre Pompidou-Metz will present a grandiose interpretation of the building. Orchestrated by Groupe F under the guidance of Christophe Berthonneau the pyrotechnists have put their mastery to work to produce an astounding light show. To celebrate the 120th anniversary of the Eiffel Tower, Groupe F put on a special display in 2009 and another amazing show in 2010 for the inauguration of the world’s tallest tower, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai.

At 10.15pm and 11.45pm – Come to the concerts by The Books and Aphex Twin
The party continues with an original programme of concerts in the Parc de la Seille. The Books set off the evening followed by Aphex Twin after the fireworks display. A mix of folk and experimental pop, the New York band The Books compile sounds extracted from the media. This duo weaves a folky, organic and digital patchwork of phrases from around the world that collide and respond to each other against a backdrop of inverted cellos and harsh guitars. One of the most influential figures of the international electronic scene, Aphex Twin explores curious and melodious sounds with ungraspable rhythms during his rare appearances on stage. His "advanced laptop dj set" will close this unique evening. These two concerts are presented in collaboration with Musiques Volantes.

Sunday 16 May
11am to 1pm - Children’s parade with the Graoully dragon

Parcours de la parade du GraoullyGrrr… the Graoully is back! Celebrated down the centuries in Metz at carnival or various processions, the famous dragon returns with a fanfare. Reinvented by Jean-Christophe Massinon for these festive days, the terrifying beast is transformed into a quite affable monster setting the tone for a joyful parade dedicated to the young. Guided by the Graoully, a procession of 1000 children and parents will parade through Metz, from the medieval town to the Amphithéâtre district, onto the front square of the Centre Pompidou-Metz where, according to legend, Saint Clement saved the people of Metz by vanquishing the monster.

1pm – Come and participate in the giant banquet
Bringing the Graoully parade and other festivities to a nice close, a giant banquet has been organised around the Centre Pompidou-Metz. Come join in the fun with family and friends. Don’t forget your picnic. Tables and chairs are provided
