Toronto International Art Fair

The seventh edition of the Toronto International Art Fair (TIAF) will take place November 9-13 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre located in the downtown core of Canada’s largest city and undisputed cultural capital. Last year’s event experienced record attendance and sales, making it one of the most successful art fairs in North America. Art Toronto 2006 will continue to expand its dynamic mix of 20^th and 21^st century art to a growing national and international audience.

An increasing number of collectors and curators from across the country and abroad are joining the groups traveling to Toronto under the Fair’s ambitious and aggressive VIP programming. Under this program, guests are treated to an array of perks and privileges in and around the Fair including luxury hotel accommodations, guided Fair tours with guest project curators, private collection and artist studio visits as well as a myriad of activities and special events throughout the city celebrating the Fair and the city’s flourishing local art community.

A valued and respected player in the competitive international art market, the Toronto International Art Fair has made its mark through a unique, strategic mix of Canadian and international galleries coupled with strong cultural programming which engages art enthusiasts, collectors and seasoned industry professionals. Through its commitment to providing a solid foundation of national participants, the Fair has become a galvanizing vehicle for the Canadian visual arts industry, attracting the participation of every important gallery across the country and major cultural institutions. Building on this solid foundation, the Fair continues to attract a growing roster of important international galleries, most of which have become part of the Fair’s permanent stable.

The Fair is underpinned by an impressive cultural program of speakers and special projects contributing to the dialogue on contemporary art and prompting art professionals and critics to view the fair as a “clearing house for new ideas". For Art Toronto 2006 these include:

Fresh Avant-Garde: An area of high interest featuring a selected group of young galleries presenting edgy and challenging work by emerging national and international artists. Most of the artwork in this section is aggressively priced at under $5,000.

Project Spaces: Project spaces dedicated to feature presentations of a body of work or project installation by one artist as selected from proposals presented by participating galleries.

Curators Invitational: Special invitational section featuring galleries selected by the TIAF Curatorial and Special Projects Committee.

News at Five: The much-acclaimed series of daily rotating exhibits curated by Canadian Art magazine editor Richard Rhodes. Visitors can enjoy a new project exhibition from its installation to completion, unveiled with a presentation given by the curator and artists at 5pm sharp. Each exhibition is on display until the following afternoon.

/Video Lounge/: A string of multi-media installations and video works presented by a guest curator. Last year’s program, curated by Peggy Gale, presented the work of Canadian video artists and winners of the annual Bell Canada Award in Video Art.

Power Lectures: A lineup of talks and panel discussions led by top art personalities and experts on topics ranging from contemporary curatorial issues to collecting and the business of art. Speakers include industry personalities, curators, art critics, worldwide collectors and artists. Organized and presented by The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery.
