As part of an ongoing committment to developing links with the Welsh
arts community, Artspace has invited four contemporary installation
artists from Cardiff to Sydney to develop work in the Gunnery studios
around ideas of light, space and air for the exhibition Glow.
Focussing on the possibilities of these elements either
metaphorically or literally, the artists will work with a range of
materials to produce large scale, site specific installations
involving 600 gold-leaf covered light bulbs, huge inflatable
light-filled structures and direct architectural interventions.
Artists - Artstation, Reiko Aoyagi and Philippa Lawrence. Curated by
Nicholas Tsoutas.
GLOW has been supported by Wales Arts International [a partnership
between the British Council & the Arts Council of Wales], Korean
Airlines, Arjo Wiggins Australia and Dalton Fine Paper.
STACKER
Sean Kerr is the third recipient of a three month New Zealand
artist's residency supported by Creative NZ/Toi Aotearoa. His
installation Stacker is comprised of a floor-to-ceiling stack of 60
speakers, assembled in an approximation of the modernist grid which
stands in the gallery like an international-style floating wall. In
fact when the viewer walks around the stack, positioning themselves
between the speakers and the gallery wall, the precarious
construction and the seeming risk of collapse become apparent turning
the work into a dyslexic and deconstructive communication tower.
Because of its scale and lo-fi making, the stack is doomed to play at
permanent hi-volume, outputting a disagreeable wall of sound. Remote
sensors in the space trigger both the sound and projected video
footage.
STACKER has been supported by Creative NZ/Toi Aotearoa, Massey
University, Wellington, and many artists and others in Sydney through
the provision of speakers - many thanks.
