Fight-Specific Isola incontra THE ISLAND
Wasteland Twining Nottingham: Isola Art Center

presentation by Aria Spinelli at Sneinton Library
Sneinton Boulevard, Sneinton, Nottingham, NG2 4FD Wednesday 20 February, 3pm.

WTN have invited Aria Spinelli to do a presentation at the Library, to share the story of Isola Art Center, their experiences of working with the local community to resist gentrification, and the notion of 'Fight-Specific Art'.

The Wasteland Twinning network is an independent network of artists' and researchers exploring the function and use of wastelands in cities. Wasteland Twinning hijacks the concept of ‘City Twinning’ and applies it to urban wastelands in order to generate a network for parallel research and action.

Wasteland Twinning Nottingham (WTN) is one of fourteen groups working on local research within this international network. They are currently engaged in a program of research, experimentation and public events focused on a wasteland in inner-city Nottingham, locally known as ‘The Island’. With a rich industrial history, the thirteen-acre Island site has lain derelict for over twenty years despite a number of ambitious redevelopment plans. It is currently being included in a new regeneration plan for the area called 'The Cultural Quarter'.

WTN’s research is focused on attempting to identify and engage with the various users of this site, and on uncovering the imagined, unrealised futures for The Island. They are interested in the uses and values latent to this site's status as 'unofficial commons' and the impact of any development on the local area. WTN are currently in residence in Sneinton Library, near to The Island, where they are talking to local people to collect memories, stories and ideas about the future of the site.

WTN's research raises particular questions about the role of artists in the development of public space, and their relationship with local communities.
