The exhibition space was opened in 1991 and conceived as a "project room", on an area of 240 sq.m. inside an original industrial building, now completely renovated. The programme focuses on the presentation of site-specific projects by artists working in Italy and abroad and initiatives to promote current art research of young artists in Italy, with no commercial purpose or restriction. The programme includes curatorial projects, installations, performances and events, as well as debates on specific issues.
In 1995 the non profit organizations Care of and Viafarini created a consortium in collaboration with "Progetto Giovani" (i.e. Youth Department) of the Municipality of Milan in order to offer specific public services in the field of contemporary visual arts: a Documentation Centre consisting of the Library, the Young Artists Archive and the Data Bank., as well as Workshops and Seminars .
The Viafarini in residency programme intends to develop, in collaboration with other countries, the association's activities in contemporary art by organizing residency periods in Italy for foreign artists.
Currently there is a collaboration with the Australia Council for the Arts.

Viafarini promotes and supports collaborative projects with international organizations through workshops, cultural exchanges, social projects, exhibitions and other initiatives by artists and curators.
Viafarini organizes and promotes art projects, exhibitions and events of special interests through its services such as press office, fundraising and assistance for specific art projects.
