La fotografa inglese inverte il ruolo tipico dei fotografi maschili che storicamente ritraggono le donne e contemporaneamente sfida i tanti stereotipi maschili. Gli uomini diventano i soggetti sottoposti al suo sguardo algido e analitco. Sono uomini diversi - tutti Americani - di varie età e diverse classi sociali, ma con qualcosa in comune: sono dietro la porta chiusa del loro bagno, dove possono nascondere, o aderire agli standard maschili con cui si confrontano. Gli scatti di Buttigieg inducono alla riflessione sul mito del machismo e gettano un intenso fascio di luce su quello che un uomo spesso non dice di sé.

Fiona Buttigieg e’ un'artista di origine Maltese, nata in Inghilterra nel 1974, che da 3 anni si é stabilita all’isola d’Elba. All’età di 15 anni riceve in regalo la sua prima macchina fotografica, da qui nasce una vera e propria attrazione per la magia della fotografia e della camera oscura. E’ stato detto che Buttigieg ha una “curiosita’ e un’occhio mentale molto investigativo”. Le sue opere dipingono la sensualitá e complessitá del mondo che la circonda.

Nel 2002, ha ricevuto la borsa di studio di Ernest G. Welch all’Universitá di Georgia State in America dove ha studiato per un Master’s di Belle Arti. Per due anni, Buttigieg ha gestito la galleria d’arte ‘Moving Spirits Gallery’ ed é stata la Presidente del gruppo ‘Women In Focus’, un colletivo di fotografe in Atlanta. Le foto di Fiona Buttigieg sono state esposte in diverse gallerie d’arte internazionali e nel 2003, é stata la protagonista nel film ‘La Vision’ girato dal regista Roberto Arevalo. Nel 2004, la serie intitolata ‘Boys Will be Boys’ é stata il sogetto di un programma della TV Canadese. All’Elba, Buttigieg é uno dei fondatori del colletivo IPOTESI, l’officina fotografica Elbana dove continua a vivere e fotografare la sua grande passion: Il Mediterraneo.

Historically, women have been the primary subjects of male artists. In ‘Boys Will be Boys’ men are the subjects of a female photographer.'Boys Will be Boys' is a photographic series that challenges the stereotypes of males by looking at the personal bathroom habits and habitats of different men. Many men have primping and preening obsessions that defy their male stereotype, for example dyeing their hair, shaving their bodies and painting their nails. In the privacy of his own bathroom, a man is able to conform to, reject or hide from the numerous stereotypes that face them in the 21st Century. These images present a realistic portrayal of men’s ‘private’ lives, without necessarily denying their maleness, or masculinity.This work is partly a response to the recent proliferation of female artists documenting and exposing their own personal lives, and those of other women, resulting in the breakdown of the numerous feminine stereotypes. As a post-feminist, it is my desire to counter-balance this trend and offer an exposé of a man’s life, and challenge some of his own stereotypes. As a curious female photographer I am able to give a non-biased, and sometimes voyeuristic view of my male subjects.

Fiona Buttigieg is a British artist with maltese roots, who has recently settled on the Italian island of Elba. Working in the media of photography, painting and sculpture, her work is often inspired by the sea that surrounds her: The Mediterranean. Her passion for photography started at the age of 15 when she received her first camera and soon afterwards discovered the magic of the darkroom.

Buttigieg's work depicts the sensuousness and the complexity of the world around her. In 2002 she was awarded the Ernest G. Welch scholarship at the University of Georgia USA, where she worked on a Master’s of Fine Art degree in Photography. During the same period, she was director of the Moving Spirits Gallery and was President of ‘Women in Focus’, a creative group of female photographers in Atlanta.

Fiona Buttigieg’s images have been exhibited internationally and in 2003 was featured in the documentary film “LA VISION” by Colombian director Roberto Arevalo. Her ‘Boys Will be Boys’ series was the subject of the Canadian TV show ‘Sex TV’ which has been aired in Canada and Norway. Her other projects, namely ‘The Mediterranean Series’ and ‘Pie’ delve into concept of memory and childhood.
