Artistes etrangers a Paris 1900-2005

Organized by The National Art Center, Tokyo, The Asahi Shimbun, TV Asahi Corporation, and the Centre Pompidou

Paris, the world capital of art, has been a magnet for artists since the late nineteenth century. Artists like Picasso (Spain), Chagall (Russia), Modigliani (Italy), Foujita (Japan) and sculptors such as Brancusi (Romania) and Giacometti (Switzerland) modeled their works on people in Paris and explored the human nature in their artistic expression. Scenes of Paris and people's life were also captured by photographers like Brassai (Hungary) and William Klein (United States). Paris was the source of artists' inspiration as well as their creation.

This exhibition will introduce collections of the Centre Pompidou, the world's leading museum of modern and contemporary art, including masterpieces in modern art history, as well as works of living artists from Asia, South America, and Africa. More than two hundred works of art explore the significance of artists' activities associated with Paris in the history of modern and contemporary art. The glorious, multi-faceted world of art cultivated by international artists in Paris will be gathered at the center of the international city of Tokyo.
