Echo and Narcissus (Ain't it Just Like the Night)

Cynthia Broan Gallery is delighted to announce it’s first solo exhibition of work by Alan Scarritt.

In his essay from the catalog, Donald Goddard said of Scarritt’s work: “For this exhibition, Alan Scarritt has brought together his most recent sound, video, photo, sculpture and installation work as well as past works that prefigure them. He first used the title “Echo and Narcissus" for a performance he did with his partner Krystyna Borkowska in 2004, though the correlation seems always to have been there, intended or not. His project is not about vanity any more than is the ancient myth's, but about self-awareness and self-exploration. In the mirror he sees himself seeing, not preening, an endless process that is constantly clouded by one’s own ruminations and actions. It is a painful process, just as Echo’s repetition of Narcissus’ utterances is a painful process of yearning, one that ultimately associates Eros and Thanatos, life and death, in the circle of knowing and not knowing".

Alan Scarritt's work in sculpture, photography, sound, video and installation has been widely exhibited at museums, galleries, public art spaces in the United States, Europe, and Australia and in institutions such as The Museum of Modern Art, The Denver Art Museum, The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, The Berkeley Museum, and the Sculpture Museum in Glaskasten, Germany. He has also performed in many galleries and music venues such as The Walker Art Center in Minneapolis and the Knitting Factory in New York. Alan Scarritt’s sound work has been presented on the radio in San Francisco, New York, Rome, and Sydney. His work is in many public collections including The Museum of Modern Art, The Denver Art Museum and The Berkeley Museum as well as many prestigous private collections. He has received numerous grants and awards such as the National Endowment for the Arts, The New York State Council on the Arts and the Pollock-Krasner Award.

For the exhibition, Scarritt has also curated a performance series of music and spoken word. The performance schedule is as follows:

Thursday, July 6, 8pm: Alan Scarritt, Ken Butler & Todd Colburn
