A mini/massive undertaking that brings together the work of 50 to 80 international artists
BiNo-ScApEs is a mini/massive undertaking that brings together the work of 50 to 80 international artists to confront the disorientation that occurs when one looks closer and closer at images; to examine the intimacy and seemingly ever more distant subject matter. It 's two exhibitions in one. Firstly, is is a room full of tiny, undistinguishable works arrayed in the distance. Secondly, it is a powerful one-on-one confrontation with spaces created specifically to be viewed under the artificial magnifying lens that displaces as it draws us near.
Curator, David Adamo, has invited each artist to create one small scape(landscape, seascape, cityscape). These are works that require a particular attention to detail due to the nature of their size and subject-matter but--further--they are works which dare to reach into tremendous distances of physical, psychological and visual space--space re-emphasized by the challenging project of their display.
Individual scapes are carefully arranged in the space. They are then viewed from across the room through stationed binoculars. The space is both the infamous White Cube of art-lore but also a labyrinthine and brilliant kaleidoscope of landscapes, sea scapes and spacescapes , whose sheer numbers prevent one from taking in their entirety at one glance. Dwelling momentarily though, through the focused lens of a binocular,one begins to re- examine the relativity of size, distance, and subject matter.
BiNo-ScApEs is made possible by Berliner Kunst Project, NY Arts/Berliner Kunst Magazine, Binoculars.com, and the artists themselves. Opening reception will be held @ Berliner Kunstprojekt, in conjunction with Relatives and Relativities by David Adamo, Jan 10th, 2004 from 18:00 - 21:00.
