The exhibition will include powerful and persuasive major works
(1903-1980)
The centenary of Graham Sutherland's birth is 2003. It will be marked by exhibitions at Tate Britain and Pallant House (Chichester) but the first - the largest and most diverse with over 100 works - will be at Olympia, 25 February-2 March 2003.
Sutherland is well remembered for his depiction of Somerset Maugham, the portrait of Sir Winston Churchill, infamously destroyed, and his epic tapestry for Coventry Cathedral. Works on show at Olympia will give proof of the diversity of his invention, the surprise and thrill of his colour, the threat in some works, the consolation in others.
In 1951 he wrote: "art is the personification of the emotions felt on perceiving and remembering, fixed and embodied in one's material". The meaning of those words will be apparent.
The exhibition will include powerful and persuasive major works, (some 100, the majority from private collections, many not seen previously in public, or for decades), as well as studies that are provisional or carry so movingly Sutherland's first response to a subject. From an early age his technique was assured; its lifetime advancement was motivated by his continuously inventive mind. At Olympia will be:
Early prints including "Pastoral", one of his most significant as it foretells a turning point in his career
War-time scenes from London and Wales
Landscapes from Wales, France and England
Religious commissions including studies relating to Coventry Cathedral tapestry
Portraits including Helena Rubinstein and Kenneth Clark
A website containing biographical details, images, a list of exhibits and background research material is at http://www.grahamsutherland.co.uk. A catalogue, including a list of exhibits and colour illustrations, will be available, free of charge, to visitors at the exhibition.
Tickets for the exhibition can be ordered in advance by calling the Olympia Box Office on 0870 736 3105, or book online. The Graham Sutherland exhibition takes place within the Spring Olympia Fine Art & Antiques air.
