"Hurrell's Hollywood Portraits" Reception featuring Mark A.

HOLLYWOOD 'Who says glamour is dead?
Legendary Hollywood glamour photographer George Hurrell died in 1992,
but his work is still with us, thanks to his biographer, Mark A.
Vieira'also America's foremost photographer and printer of images in the
"Hurrell style." The exhibition entitled
"Hurrell's Hollywood Portraits" is on display in the lobby of
Hollywood's ArcLight Cinemas through December 31st.
Hurrell's sultry images have become cultural icons, but don't expect to
see such well-known shots as Jean Harlow on a bearskin rug. Vieira has
printed a dazzling new group of fabulous faces from a wide assortment of
original Hurrell negatives. This mini-galaxy of stars from Hollywood's
Golden Era includes such legends as Marlene Dietrich, Hum-phrey Bogart,
and Veronica Lake. There are also several variations on Hurrell's
favorite female, Joan Crawford.
To represent Harlow, Vieira has printed a sexy pose made in conjunction
with the classic all-star film, Dinner at Eight. This arresting
photograph was made in June 1933, when Harlow had returned from a Palm
Springs vaca-tion'tanned, rested, and ready for Hurrell, who applied
baby oil to her skin and plied her with gin. The result was a
high-voltage session whose images still carry a jolt. Vieira tells this
behind-the-scenes story in the Harry N. Abrams book, Hurrell's Hollywood
Portraits. He will be signing this and his most recent Abrams book, Sin
in Soft Focus: Pre-Code Hollywood, at a special reception at the
Arclight on December 12th at 7:00 p.m., just in time for Holiday
gift-giving.
Vieira's work with vintage Hollywood negatives began in 1975, when his
skilled darkroom work brought him to the attention of Hurrell, who was
then preparing his first book. Vieira is the only photographer making
portraits with Hur-rell's exact technique, using vintage 8x10 cameras,
incandescent lights, and full negative retouching. He executes these
portraits in Hurrell's original studio in the historic Granada
Buildings, using the Master's own Verito lens.
