Cruiser

galerie wieland is pleased to present Cruiser, the first solo exhibition in Berlin of British artist Jo Mitchell. Mitchell uses words as objects, usually rendered as ornately embellished and overlapping paper and vinyl cutouts that are visually and stylistically onomatopoetic. She is interested in the way that words can become fetishistic abstractions if overwhelmed by the demands of style, as well as the subtexts that style and graphics convey. In the many cultural processes by which words are visually represented, words usually run the risk of being as critic Dave Hickey has said "rubbed smooth of meaning." Mitchells images play with this disconnection between appearance and content, while the expressively exaggerated lettering styles that she favors come loaded with all kinds of subcultural references from "souped-up" hotrods and decoratively customized vans and motorcycles, to heavy metal album cover graphics, graffiti tags, and logo-like tattoos. With their latent sexual undertones and insinuations of desire, aggression, and violence, her cutouts are given a greater opticality and sense of depth through the staggered overlapping of identically shaped, yet chromatically varied, layers.

Accompanying the shows main cutout, Cruiser (the title actually refers to a specialized motorcycle driving style but contains darker associations having to do with display and predation) will be two other cutouts, His and Hers, which concern the design stereotypes of gender-specific branding. In the current installation Mitchell will also realize a unique wall painting that will act as a sort of hybrid between a personal gothic-style emblem and the more generic geometric lettering motifs found in automobile logo design. In addition, she will present a series of new photo-based works: The Death's Angels portraits - associated with Hell's Angels - are referring to sci-fi starfighters and Lara Croft iconography and link up with the Cruiser scenario. This hybrid persona is also explored as a more abstract model through spraying and colour-coding which further enhances the designed and sculptural nature of the images.
