Welcome to the first International Film Festival in Walthamstow. Running as part of the
E17 Arts Trail, this is the first time that Walthamstow has celebrated talent in cinema
since the glory days of the Hollywood cine studios, which were formerly based in the borough
and were the forerunners of their more famous counterparts Elstree, Pinewood and
Hollywood USA.
Aptly named "boutique" in style, this small but exciting cinematic event will take place in
retro furniture shop Beyca, at 83 Grove Road E17. The films will be shown over the ten
days of the festival on a specially commissioned vintage style 1950s television. All film
entries are 5 minutes in length or under and will be shown on a loop so that viewers can
watch as few or as many films that they like. With 90 films from international locations
such as Japan, Canada, Russia, Czech Republic and USA, as well as our own borough of
Walthamstow and neighbouring London boroughs, there is plenty to see, to appreciate and
enjoy. All foreign films are subtitled and all the content is suitable for family viewing.
Following the festival, the plan is to run film production, scriptwriting and film appreciation
workshops so be sure to register any interest at www.e17films.com
We would like to extend our thanks to all of our unpaid volunteers, who worked tirelessly
to make the film festival happen, all of our judges, sponsors and supporters, to Lulu and
Rudy for giving up their summer holiday and to the generous public who bought the
I Walthamstow merchandise to fund the Festival Programme production.
Paul and Liza Fletcher,
Walthamstow International Film Festival Directors.

The artist's fascination with authentic emotion is nothing new but “real” emotion seems to have become one of the biggest sellers in our society during the past 15 years. Reality TV shows like Big Brother or The X-Factor are capitalizing on that special moment when the candidate finds out if he/she has made it to the next round. The internet too has made us aware of the phenomenon of being exposed and private at the same time.
Facebook gives us visibility to an anonymous mass if we wish to be exposed. We are asked to be in the now: “Just landed at Heathrow”, “Relationship status: Single, 5 minutes ago”; as dramatic or as banal or boring as we please. Any emotion counts.
By being public we have acquired anonymity and intimacy at the same time. Because of this ability to be at the same time public and anonymous we have acquired a new understanding of public life and the responsibility that was traditionally associated with it.
How real is the reality in this Twitter world?
In effect we are already one step removed from reality as soon as we comment on it. Compared to a gladiator fighting in a Roman arena the internet seems a safe place. Our gusto to be part of a spectacle could only be described as natural. After all we are social beings. Could the function of virtual social networks as witnesses of our emotions be compared to the function of a psychotherapy group?
Modernist sculptors used to talk about the space in between objects. I propose we reflect upon the emotional space created by our digital society.

City & Guilds of London Art School 30/8/110 16:9 |
MA Fine Art Show 2010 PRESS RELEASE MA Fine Art Show
9 - 12 September 2010
Private View Wednesday 8 September 5pm to 9pm
City & Guilds of London Art School is proud to present its 2010 MA Fine Art Show. 17 students will show their work in the Georgian surroundings of the School’s historic site on the edge of Cleaver Square, minutes away from Kennington tube station. Most of the works will be for sale and entrance to the exhibition is free. To coincide with the show, the Art Lift project, organised with public art agency Art Below, will feature student works from 1-12 September in the two lifts at Kennington Tube station (see www.artbelow.org.uk for more information).
The School offers an intensive 1 year full time (or 2 year part-time) MA in Fine Art, giving students the chance to benefit from advanced teaching by leading practitioners and develop their practice within a critical and professional framework.
Graduating students in their own words
The work of Adriana Arango oscillates between parody and sincerity. Each of the images depicts the artist assuming the role of characters found in magazines or pulp novels. The slow process of oil painting is used to point out what is often hidden by the speed at which the original images are produced.
Scott Blaser: The virgin canvas presents the purest light. With the first mark, history begins and it is all down hill from there.
Holly Chambers approaches drawing by simply drawing a line. However, through an obsessive process of repetition the line is contorted and a form, or rather a surface, is brought into existence. The work is thrown into the world of illusion, but remains rooted in an organic process. It exists as testaments of endurance, experimentations with the properties and definitions of the drawn mark. Despite any resemblances found, the viewer is encouraged to look and then look again, and see that the surfaces or forms presented exist in reality as a collection of meticulously placed lines.
Ruth Goddard: My exact subject shifts and eludes my grasp every time I define it in language; but I am constantly examining themes of trauma, violence and mourning. I hope to tease out the memories and 'bonds that compose us' as individuals - as well as mirror those shared memories that exist within a wider community. I know I can never catch them, but I hope that if I dangle my leg over the side of my bed the monster will bite.
Takayuki Hara: My work concerns eternal possibilities of our identity. Influenced by Deleuzian theories, I am exploring the idea of the ever-expanding potentiality of our univocal being, with an intricate and obsessive drawing style.
Barbara Hoogeweegen responds to Jacques Lacan's statement: 'There is no such thing as a sexual relationship'. Lacan is stating that men and women do not 'interact' with each other. The paintings are made to investigate whether the facial expressions that reveal the kaleidoscope of emotions that exist between people support Lacan's thinking.
Margaret Koval's paintings are about instability and uncertainty. She uses CCTV surveillance imagery as a vehicle to explore these themes and employs an idiosyncratic painting style that embodies them. The pixels of the CCTV source material are often rendered with thread-like strands of translucent oil paint. The resulting artworks seem to straddle categories: they are paintings with the dimensionality of sculptural relief, the refractive quality of stained glass, and the physical presence of tapestry or thread-worn carpet.
Dan McDermott: I am showing a series of paintings based on film stills, lifted from YouTube, from one of the earliest examples of cinema. This short piece of film lasting less than one minute was filmed by the Lumiere Brothers in the 1890s. It shows a train pulling into a station in France and people entering and alighting from the train. I attempt to journey into the image further using paint to understand and make manifest my fascination with certain kinds of images.
Minako Nonaka: I explore pictorial space and what happens when I paint reminds me of some landscapes within my memory. My painting resides between abstraction and objectivity. I paint the 'epic' landscape with a sense of feeling, which evokes the unknown and infinite space beyond sight. My aim now is to create metaphor, not simile.
Catherine Phillips: The fragmented landscape of the limestone quarry of Provence and the built environment of the Andalusían white village street form the basis for interrogations into the perception of space, form and light.
Lachlan Thom: I make paintings that move and work in a way I could not foresee. This freedom of action and imagination is what allows philosophy and theory to breathe. Through figuration and abstraction I suggest function and meaning, but this is just a suggestion.
Maria Thurn und Taxis: I believe life is marked by ambiguities, social, biological as well as ethical. My fascination lies in tensions, or polemics that are inherent in these ambiguities and their relationship to the human condition. These relate to questions between life and death , or pain and happiness. Initially, my drive to paint is an emotional one, deeper than reason and prior to intellectual analysis.
Richard Crawford, Amy Gadney, Alex Gough, Maggie Kennedy and Roland Osita Nwankwo will be showing work at the halfway stage of their part-time MA.
About City & Guilds of London Art School
City & Guilds of London Art School (founded in 1879) occupies a distinctive position in art education. It is the only art school in London offering degree-validated courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels which has retained its independent status, and has not been absorbed by the University of the Arts or any other higher educational conglomerate.
In Fine Art, the School is known for the quality of its teaching in the traditions of painting, sculpture and printmaking within a thoroughly contemporary context. This specialist position provides an important alternative to the priorities of most other, larger art schools, and lends a high degree of focus to the students involved. Recent graduates such as Barnaby Hosking, Alastair Mackie, Alex Gene Morrison, Oliver Clegg and Hugo Wilson have gone on to establish themselves as some of the leading young contemporary artists of their generation.
The School’s independent status has been crucial to its remaining small and specialist. All courses are taught by practicing artists and career professionals with international reputations including Andrew Grassie, Reece Jones, Mathew Collings and Jasper Joffe. The core MA staff include Tony Carter, Robin Mason, Teresita Dennis, Andy Bannister, Reece Jones, Kate Palmer and Jane Langley. Visiting lecturers have included: Norman Rosenthal, Basil Beattie, Paul Winstanley, Andrew Mummery, Alexis Harding, Gordon Cheung, Colin Smith, David Kefford, Anne Hardy, Tom Godfrey, Lucy Williams, Zavier Ellis, Max Attenborough, Chris Davies, Will Turner, Paul Becker, Francesca Lowe, Helen Sumpter, Nick Hackworth, Jonathan Wateridge, Neil Rumming Christian Ward.

L'odore dell'acqua L'odore dell'acqua
Come sempre.

IV EDIZIONE PREMIO LETTERARIO SERGIO DE SCERNI, IV EDIZIONE PREMIO LETTERARIO DEDICATO A SERGIO DE RISIO
