Chi è Oreste? Oreste non è nessuno. Non è un gruppo che produce opere collettive, non è un sindacato che rivendica riconoscimenti, non è un'associazione culturale. Per ora è un insieme variabile di persone, in
prevalenza artisti italiani, che da circa due anni - dalla prima residenza presso la foresteria comunale di
Paliano (FR) - lavora per creare spazi di libertà e operatività per idee, invenzioni, progetti. Sono artisti che si sono "trovati" (e che continuano a trovarsi, in un processo ramificato e aperto), che fanno della collaborazione e della relazione con gli altri una pratica abituale della loro professionalità, che sono portatori di una modalità di lavoro che probabilmente è condivisibile da molti altri, in Italia o altrove. Residenze estive, laboratori, pagine web, riunioni, viaggi, convegni, discussioni via voce e via e-mail, libri, teorie e pubbliche prese di posizione testimoniano la vitalità e la capacità di Oreste di mettere in comune risorse, qualità, esperienze e disponibilità a nuovi imprevedibili sviluppi. oreste@undo.net |

Le Tribu' dell'arte posted on Jan 17th, 2001 (La versione italiana segue quella inglese) Oreste has been invited to the exhibition "le tribù dell'arte" that will open in Rome (Galleria Comunale d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea) on April 11. We have decided to exhibit "provisions" for our next residency programs. The idea is that each person who wants to be part of the project will try to find one (or more) sponsor who could provide any kind of products potentially useful for the residency (pasta, pillows, blankets and computers, food and vans, wine and photocopy machine, airplane tickets, coffee etc.) Everything will be exhibited in one of the spaces of the Gallery, and later, during the residency, used. Hopefully we will be able to reimburse the costs of transportation to Rome for the goods. References for the sponsors could be oreste's publications (three books) and all oreste's curriculum of projects and activities. Also, a copy of the official invitation letter (by the City of Rome) can be sent upon request. What follows is a text that describes the project (roughly translated). Oreste Provisions (Le Provviste di Oreste) An Oreste project for the show "Le Tribù dell'Arte", Rome, Galleria Comunale d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea, March- June 2001 Oreste is a place, not a person. In this place, that is continuously changing, people meet, eat, sleep, and talk, trying to create the best conditions for exchanging ideas and new projects to work together on. The different Oreste's projects, since the very beginning, have been feeded by the free and passionate contribution of their participants, as weel as by the support of small companies and local institutions. In order to continue to live - though accepting changes and transformations - Oreste needs to be a place where energies and personal contributions are put together; a place where things are added to other things, to fulfill and increase a common good and common purposes. The main idea for the "Tribù dell'Arte" show is the creation of an accumulation of material goods that will be used for the next summer residency (or residencies). This idea will follow the model already used for the "Oreste at the Venice Biennale" project in 1999. In that occasion all the participants to the almost one hundred events that took place within the Oreste space in the Italian pavilion, could take advantage not only of shared knowledge and information, but also of the logistic support offered by several different sponsors (furniture companies as well as wine producers or coffee makers etc.). The new Oreste provisions "storage" will be located in one of the spaces within the Galleria Comunale d'Arte Moderna in Rome, and will be the temporary "terminal" where all the materials got from companies, shops, privates etc. will be collected. It can be food, and technical equipments, and different services etc. Oreste è stato invitato alla mostra "Le Tribù dell'Arte" alla galleria Comunale d'Arte Moderna di Roma (opening previsto 11 aprile 2001); ai curatori della sezione alla quale oreste partecipa (Cecilia Casorati, Viktor Misiano, Lorenzo Benedetti) è stato proposto un progetto (descritto sotto) basato sulla raccolta di "provviste" potenzialmente utili per le prossime residenze orestiane.. E' presumibile che chi lavora al reperimento possa avere un rimborso spese per le spedizioni. Le Provviste di Oreste Progetto Oreste per "Le Tribu' dell'Arte" Galleria Comunale d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea, Roma (spazi della ex-Peroni) Oreste e' un luogo, non una persona. In questo luogo (che e' sempre diverso) le persone si incontrano, mangiano, dormono e parlano, creando le migliori condizioni in cui si possano manifestare e condividere nuovi progetti. I progetti Oreste, sin dagli esordi, si sono alimentati del contributo libero e appassionato dei partecipanti, al quale si sono aggiunte le disponibilita' di piccole istituzioni che lo hanno supportato. Per vivere - pur trasformandosi - Oreste ha bisogno di questo: essere un luogo dove vengano messe in campo delle energie e dei contributi personali, un posto dove si 'aggiungono' cose che vanno ad incrementare un bene comune. L’idea portante del progetto per "Le Tribu' dell'Arte" e' quella di costituire un accumulo di beni materiali che verranno in seguito utilizzati nelle residenze estive di Oreste, secondo un principio gia' sperimentato nel 1999 in occasione della partecipazione alla Biennale di Venezia: i partecipanti al fitto programma di incontri e di iniziative della Biennale avevano infatti potuto contare non soltanto su conoscenze, informazioni e risorse messe in comune da singoli e partecipanti, ma anche sul supporto logistico di diversi sponsor (dalle aziende di arredamento ai produttori vinicoli). Il nuovo magazzino delle provviste di Oreste sara' collocato in uno spazio all’interno della Galleria Comunale d'Arte Moderna di Roma, e diverra' il terminale temporaneo di riferimento al quale fare affluire i materiali recuperati attraverso le richieste alle aziende: generi alimentari, attrezzature tecniche, servizi. |

Oreste 3 projects di Giovanna Trento, g.trento@mclink.it 2 LABORATORI (vedi progetti specifici): - 15 CENE - SENSO DI CASA PROGETTI DI RACCORDO FRA "SENSO DI CASA" E "15 CENE": -Alla fine delle cene verranno raccolti i rifiuti commestibili che verranno poi dati di volta in volta agli animali di qulcuno che abita a Monte. -Sono in fase di preparazione un paio di video che raccordano il tema della casa a quelli della cena, della festa, del viaggio e della migrazione. -ELENA COLOGNI: ciao giovanna, io insieme a giusy, laura ed elisa inizialmente avevamo cominciato a contattare ferdy per aderire al suo progetto. Il titolo e': "tra due terre". Il mio precedente interesse a capire meglio il problema dell'emigrazione e ritorno a casa in quel luogo in relazione alla mia e nostra esperienza fuori dall'Italia ci ha portato a concepire un qualche cosa che forse si intreccia con senso di casa. Il progetto si sviluppa nel periodo che saremo a Monte, nella ricerca di questo tipo di esperienze vissute da abitanti di monte, attraverso incontri in cui si parlerà prevalentemente di cibo. Raccoglieremo della documentazione video che useremo durante la cena che faremo. FESTIVAL SASSO D'ORO: Si tratta di un'informale competizione di canto e ballo che vedrà impegnati quanti lo desiderano fra orestiani, residenti di Montescaglioso e visitatori. LABORATORIO PER BAMBINI: Su suggerimento di Marino Caputo (il figlio di Franco), bambini di Monte e figli di orestiani raccoglieranno gli scatoloni di negozi e supermercati per giocare insieme alle costruzioni in uno dei chiostri dell'Abbazia. ATTIVITA' RICREATIVE COLLETTIVE: A Montescaglioso è possibile giocare all'aperto a bocce e a calcetto. Esistono alcuni circoli per giocare a carte. Vi è anche un laboratorio di falegnamera collocato all'interno di un ex convento accanto all'Abbazia dove alcuni uomini giocano continuamente a carte. Inoltre Filippo Falaguasta vorrebbe organizzare un rave party. CINEMA: Pino Boreste sta coordinando il cineclub. Consigli e cassette sono benvenuti. ESCURSIONI Ecco quanto comunicatomi da Franco Caputo: Elenco provvisorio delle escursioni previste per Oreste 3. - N. 2 escursioni nella Murgia per un intinerario tra chiese e monasteri in grotta in un habitat ancora selvaggio. - Visita ai Sassi di Matera compreso l'affaccio dalla parte opposta della città. - In occasione della serata dedicata alla cultura del vino, visita al Museo di Metaponto per una mostra dedicata " alla bevanda degli dei e degli uomoni ". - In alternativa tra di loro A)Castello e borgo di Pietrapertosa. Il paesino più alto della Basilicata a 1100 metri sul mare. Dai ruderi del castello, panorama mozzafiato. B) Venosa (la città di Orazio), con castello, cattedrale, parco archeologico ed una grandiosa chiesa medievale. ORESTE 3 Montescaglioso 2000 2 WORKSHOPS: -15 DINNERS Those who take part in this workshop, individually or within a group, can propose one or several projects related to the food-issue, such as: researching local (or non-local) recipes, ways and forms of preparing and presenting food, ingredients required according to the season and to local peculiarities, etc. Every evening such projects and researches will get to a temporary conclusion with one of the fifteen dinners that will be held at the Abbey, where it will be possible to cook, eat, and spend some time all together. Fifteen Dinners is organized by Filippo Falaguasta, Matteo Fraterno, and Ferdinando Mazzitelli. Tonino Soranno and a cook from Montescaglioso will help them and provide suggestions. Tonino Soranno teaches in Matera at the Istituto Alberghiero and has widely researched on cooking and eating costumes, focusing on the relationship between food and territory, women, identity, literature, and art. A professional local cook will constitute a link between the visiting artists and the area, the countryside, the supplies, and the farmers, always keeping health in mind. -FEELING A SENSE OF HOME This workshop (organized by Giancarlo Norese and Giovanna Trento) intends to establish a communication with the Montescaglioso community, in an area where several people left years ago to work abroad and are now coming back "home". It focuses on hospitality, sharing the domestic space, getting to know each other, and providing a link with the area. Dora Brio, a resident of Montescaglioso, will contact some people and families interested in the project and the participants will visit them in their private homes, where an exchange will hopefully take place: photos or videos to look at, a story to be told, a performance introduced by the "guests" will be exchanged with other things proposed by the "hosts" (a meal, a story, a photograph, .). Details will be decided by the householders (how, when, for how long, how many artists,...). Domestic routes will be possibly followed by others on the territory, providing a link between inside and outside: Montescaglioso residents, if they like, may take us out to the countryside, to the place where they work or to any other site they consider relevant. PROJECTS IN BETWEEN "FEELING A SENSE OF HOME" AND "15 DINNERS": -At the end of each dinner leftovers will be given to the animals of the area. -We are editing a couple of videos that deal with the following issues: house and home, eating together, having a party, travelling, and migrating. -ELENA COLOGNI wrote: ciao Giovanna. Giusy, Laura, Elisa, and I started to work on "15 Dinners" with a project called "between 2 Lands". Referring to our own experience, we would like to go deeper into such issues as migration, immigration, and coming back home. In Montescaglioso we would like to get in touch with people that have been through such an experience, talking about food with them. We will videotape the conversations and will use the material during the dinner that we'll prepare. FESTIVAL SASSO D'ORO: Residents and visitors, if they like, will gather together to take part in an informal competition of dance, music, performance, and singing. KIDS: As suggested by Marino Caputo (8 years old), resident and visiting kids will collect recycled cardboard boxes from shops and supermarkets to play together in a big yard of the Abbey. SPENDING TIME TOGETHER: In Montescaglioso you can play bowls and soccer. There are some clubs where people play cards. There is also a carpentry in a former convent near the Abbey where there are men that play cards very often. Besides, Filippo Falaguasta would like to organize a rave party. CINEMA: Pino Boresta is organizing some film projections. Suggestions and videotapes are welcome. TRIPS: Franco Caputo is willing to take us to: -the Murgia area where there are some cave-curches. -"Sassi di Matera" (cave-houses in Matera). -"Museo di Metaponto" where there'll be an exhibition about the wine. -Pietrapertosa, a village on the mountains where there is an old castle and a wonderful view or to Venosa, where Orazio was born, where there is a castle, a cathedral, an archeological park, and a wonderful medieval church. |

ORESTE 3 4th Annual Summer Residency Program by Cesare Pietroiusti, cmp@shareware.it Oreste 3 is a Summer Residency for Italian and international artists (visual artists, writers, poets...) and curators that will take place in Montescaglioso (Italy) between August 26 and September 10, 2000. Montescaglioso is located in Basilicata (Matera province, Southern Italy) 20 km away from the beach. In the center of this small town there is a medieval former Abbey and various historical and archeological sites can be visited in the area. Un programma per Oreste Tre di Cesare Pietroiusti, cmp@shareware.it Montescaglioso 23. 04. 2000 Jammin caffè. Mattina Sono presenti intorno al tavolo del bar: Ferdinando Mazzitelli, Tonino Soranno, Dario Carmentano, Dora Brio, Lucia Castellaneta, Franco Caputo, Cesare Pietroiusti, Caroline Bachmann, Elisa Ottaviani. ORESTE 3 Oreste 3 sarà una residenza per artisti italiani e stranieri di 16 giorni, dal 26 agosto al 10 settembre 2000. A differenza degli scorsi anni, la residenzanon ruoterà intorno alla sistematica presentazione dei lavori di individui e gruppi presenti, ma prenderà la forma di alcuni laboratori. Come nella migliore tradizione orestiana, Oreste 3 vuole valorizzare gli aspetti piacevoli e divertenti della residenza, nellauspicio di evitare affanni a partecipanti e organizzatori. Ogni partecipante (artista o non artista) può liberamente decidere di far parte di uno (o più) dei seguenti gruppi di lavoro, nonché di proporre fattive e auspicabili collaborazioni. 1. Quindici cene (Oreste Cucina) Tonino Soranno, professore presso lIstituto Alberghiero di Matera, studioso degli usi alimentari collegati soprattutto a temi quali: territorio, donna, identità, filosofia, letteratura ed arte (ha collaborato con Freddy alla mostra out the blue) è direttamente interessato al progetto, infatti, ha già iniziato a lavorarci con Ferdinando e Matteo Fraterno. In cucina un cuoco professionista, scelto tra le persone del luogo, potrà costituire un elemento di garanzia per gli aspetti igienico-sanitari e di collegamento tra gli artisti partecipanti al workshop e il territorio (reperimento ingredienti, collegamento con i fornitori, contadini, produttori ecc.). Inoltre, sarà probabilmente necessaria una persona che segua da un punto di vista contabile la gestione economica della spesa, con relativo reperimento delle fatture (da esibire per eventuali sovvenzioni). Tutti i partecipanti a oreste 3 potranno, individualmente o in gruppi, proporre uno o più progetti di lavoro sul tema del cibo. Potrà trattarsi di ricerche intorno a ricette (locali o no), alle modalità di preparazione e di presentazione del cibo, alle materie prime e agli ingredienti, in rapporto alle stagioni e alle caratteristiche locali e così via. Ciascuno di tali progetti o segmenti di ricerca troverà la sua conclusione in una delle quindici cene della residenza. La cosa migliore sarebbe che i progetti siano proposti al più presto, in modo da attivare un confronto tra coordinatori, consulenti (Tonino, il cuoco) e artisti proponenti per valutare i problemi legati alla realizzabilità e alle forme di documentazione dei singoli progetti. La cucina dovrebbe essere impiantata in Abbazia e dopo i recenti lavori avremo spazi nuovi e puliti, nonché sale per riunioni e per mangiare, oziare ecc. Senso di Casa Questa proposta di workshop (di Giovanna Trento, con solidarietà di Giancarlo Norese) riguarda degli incontri con le persone e le famiglie residenti a Montescaglioso (in alcuni casi si tratta di persone che sono "rientrate" a casa dopo aver lavorato allestero), basati sull'ospitalità, la condivisione dello spazio domestico, la conoscenza reciproca e il rapporto con il paesaggio e il territorio. Particolare rilievo avrà l'idea di "scambio". Una volta contattate in loco delle persone interessate a lavorare insieme, nelle loro case avranno luogo via via degli incontri che ruoteranno attorno a una questione o abitudine proposta dagli ospitanti (per esempio veniamo invitati a conoscere i nipoti di Caio, oppure a condividere il pollice verde di qualcuno, ad assaggiare le speciali olive di un altro, a guardare delle fotografie o magari a dare una mano). Gli artisti, in numero limitato, risponderanno allinvito proponendo a loro volta qualcosa (ad esempio mostrando un video, facendo una performance o altro). Si potrebbe anche costituire un catalogo dove gli artisti coinvolti propongano una serie di interventi da farsi in una determinata casa. Le persone di Montescaglioso potranno così invitare gli artisti nelle loro case in relazione alle proposte fatte da essi, offrendo in cambio qualcosa di loro (visione di foto o video, il racconto di una una storia, ricette e pietanze, ecc.). E’ auspicabile che i percorsi domestici siano collegati ad altri percorsi all esterno, così da rendere labitazione uno snodo di comunicazione fra esterno e interno e tra individuo e comunità. Le persone potrebbero venire sollecitate a condurci fuori casa, se vogliono, nei luoghi del loro passaggio abituale (lavoro, campagna, ecc.) o in altri siti che ritengano di rilievo. In questa prospettiva "Senso di casa" potrebbe incrociarsi con il progetto "Quindici cene" e avere in Abbazia a mangiare con noi, ovvero a cucinare, alcune persone di Montescaglioso già conosciute a casa loro. Artisti vicini e lontani (titolo provvisorio) Dario Carmentano propone una terza area di lavoro che riguarda la conoscenza e lo scambio con gli artisti locali. La proposta vuole mettere in comunicazione gli orestiani con le realtà (associazioni e singoli) che lavorano nell'ambito dell'arte, nel territorio di Matera, per conoscersi, scambiarsi idee, dare inizio a possibili collaborazioni. Dario si occuperà di individuare in tempi brevi un certo numero (massimo una decina) di artisti e associazioni, i quali autonomamente proporranno un incontro con gli orestiani, scegliendo il luogo (potrebbe essere lo studio di unartista, ma anche un bar o una piazza), il tema (i propri lavori, o argomenti di carattere più generale), le modalità (ad eswempio un numero massimo di "visitatori" nel caso di visite a luoghi di dimensioni ridotte). Gli orestiani presenti potranno liberamente partecipare e, nel caso di numero limitato, prenotarsi. I gruppi coinvolti finora nella richiesta di fondi UE sono: Konstakuten (Stoccolma), Wochenklausur (Vienna), Generator (Dundee), Arthur R. May meetings Oreste meetings at "democracy!" Royal College of Art, London 11th-12th May 2000 A meeting between independent groups, non-profit-making organisations and artist-run initiatives, to be held at the Royal College of Art, on 11th and 12th May 2000. The meeting will take the form of a series of discussions the groups, most of whom are based in London, but also with representatives from throughout Europe. The meeting, that will be open to the general public, and is intended as an opportunity to for individual group's to gain access to the activities of other groups, with the aim of promoting discourse and initiating future collaborative projects. The meeting will take place in lecture theatre 1 at the Royal College of Art. It will be held over two days, and divided into three sessions, as follows: 2pm - 6pm Thursday 11th May 9am- 12am Friday 12th May 2pm - 6pm Friday 12th May During the initial session, each of the participating groups will have the opportunity to give a short presentation about their activities. This is intended as an opportunity for both Oreste and each of the groups to become familiarised with each of the other groups practises. The following sessions are intended as opportunities for Oreste and each the other groups to be able to discuss their future aims and projects in an open arena. Oreste hope that through the open discussions, a platform for future communication between the groups will be initiated, with the possibility of working collaboratively on future projects. Within the sessions Oreste plan to include: - Presentations about Oreste activities (This may take the form of a couple of short interventions in the second and third two sessions. The will focus on Oreste's past, current and future projects. Here Oreste would also like to discuss points where other groups can become involved in Oreste's projects). - Discussion on the issues of networking among independent groups, non-profit-making organisations, and artist-run initiatives as an alternative to the star system in the art field. - Discussion around the possibility of creating a way to exchange information and projects, sharing resources and multiplying opportunities. - Discussion around the possibility of creating a permanent forum for periodical meetings among independent groups, non-profit-making organisations, and artist-run initiatives. - Discussion of the proposals by the participating groups. Democracy! At the 1972 Documenta, Joseph Beuys presented the Organisation for Direct Democracy, an all-inclusive vision which embraced artistic, social and political activities. democracy! explores the substance of this vision. It recognises the need to find a productive role for the artist within society. It acknowledges the desire to build relationships and integrate artistic practices, and to develop new and practical links within and outside the artistic community. To embrace democracy involves the sacrifice of ego and the acceptance of collaboration. It is risky and uncertain, frustrating and rewarding. Its relations cannot be assumed; they have to be debated. It remains abstract unless realised and can be stifled by realisation. Nearly everybody understands what democracy means. But everybody has different ideas about what it is or should be. It is an ongoing process in which contradiction and failure play a part. democracy! at the Royal College of Art might be seen as a contradiction in terms, because the work in this exhibition has largely arisen in opposition to the specialist institutions of art. democracy! is about questioning the structures which prompted the search for alternatives in the first place. It looks to create a productive dialogue between communities, collectives, individuals, organisations and audiences, acknowledging that all have something to learn from each other. ArtLab, B.a.d.
