"From 1984-1991 Mann turned her camera's eye toward children and the family
with the primary interest focused on children and their relationships. In
the series, At Twelve , Mann's consummate skill preserved young adolescents
in the uncertain time between childhood and adulthood. Confusion, longing,
and fear gaze out from the purity of youth. In their dreams and role playing
the children are tainted by the grittyness of a messy adult world and yet
mercurial spirits allow them to temporarily free themselves from the bonds
of impending adulthood."
